How to Make Cinnamon-Scented Pinecone Ornaments for Your Home

These homemade cinnamon scented pinecones fill your home with a cozy, holiday aroma. With just a few simple materials you can create a warm, comforting scent that lasts and can be refreshed whenever you like.

Cinnamon Scented Pinecones

I love autumn and everything it brings, and I can’t help but decorate early. One of my favorite seasonal touches is cinnamon scented pinecones — they make any room smell amazing.

I used to buy scented pinecones, but the fragrance rarely lasted. Since a small bundle can cost around $10 and fade quickly, I started making my own. They’re inexpensive, simple to make, and you can refresh the scent whenever it begins to fade.

Gathering pinecones is a fun family activity — we turn it into a little scavenger hunt. If you don’t have access to natural pinecones, you can buy plain, unscented pinecones from craft or online stores.

Materials Needed:

● Pine cones in varying sizes
● Gallon-size sealable bag
● 100% essential oils (orange, cinnamon, and a calming blend such as Stress Away are great; substitute with other essential oils if you prefer)
● Aluminum foil
● Large cookie sheet

Note: Use 100% essential oils only — not wax burner oils or candle-making oils.

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 200°F.

2. Line a large cookie sheet with foil.

3. Spread the pinecones in a single layer on the foil and bake for 40 minutes. This will dry them out and kill any small insects that might be hiding inside.

4. Remove the pan and let the pinecones cool completely.

5. Place the cooled pinecones in a large gallon-size sealable bag.

6. Add essential oils to the bag. A good starting blend is 10 drops of orange, 8 drops of cinnamon, and 6 drops of a calming blend. Adjust amounts and combinations until you find the scent you prefer.

7. Seal the bag and shake gently so the oils distribute across the pinecones.

8. Remove excess air from the bag and seal tightly.

9. Store the sealed bag in a cool, dark place for one week. This allows the oils to fully absorb into the pinecones and creates a stronger, longer-lasting scent.

10. After a week, remove the pinecones and arrange them in a bowl or scatter them around your home for a festive fragrance. When the scent fades, simply add a few more drops of oil to refresh them.
