People often ask what single change helped my wellness the most. Was it cleaner eating, reducing stress, or prioritizing sleep? The honest answer is yes to all of those — but there’s one other factor that made the biggest difference: the people I chose to surround myself with.
Looking back, the most significant leaps in my wellness journey didn’t come only from habits or routines, but from the company I kept. Like-minded friends, fellow wellness enthusiasts, and encouraging acquaintances who shared my outlook supported and amplified my goals. These were people who understood me, encouraged my best self, and helped me stay on track.
At the time I didn’t always recognize how pivotal those connections would be. In hindsight, they were invaluable — as clear as the old saying, hindsight is 20/20.
The importance of like-minded support
After leaving my corporate job last year I impulsively enrolled in an online blogging course called Bright-Eyed and Blog-Hearted. I signed up partly because friends and family suggested I document the healthy recipes I was constantly sharing. I expected a simple how-to on blogging, but what I found was far more meaningful: a community of positive, supportive, authentic women who genuinely wanted to see each other succeed.
The course content was excellent and it helped launch Downshiftology, but the real gift was the encouragement and kindness of the group. Their upbeat, nurturing energy surprised me at first—I remember wondering if it was too good to be true. It wasn’t. That supportive atmosphere filled a gap I hadn’t realized existed and became a powerful influence on my life.
From that point on I resolved to surround myself with people who lift me up and make me better. Life is too short to settle for anything less.
Another turning point was connecting with other health-focused food bloggers. These were people who shopped farmer’s markets, embraced real food, and didn’t blink at burgers wrapped in lettuce or mason jars of homemade sauerkraut. They understood the little choices that matter and celebrated them. Being among people who spoke my language — bloggers, coaches, and practitioners who prioritized health and happiness — helped elevate my wellness in tangible ways.
Which got me to thinking
Being surrounded by like-minded friends meets a deep human need: to be understood and accepted. We all crave encouragement, recognition, and the small celebrations—the hugs, “atta girls,” and virtual high-fives. That validation feels good, but it also does more: it makes wellness goals feel achievable, brightens daily life, and adds more joy to the journey.
So ask yourself: are you surrounded by supportive, like-minded wellness friends? Do you have a network that wants to see you thrive and become the best version of yourself—brighter, healthier, and more energized?
If you don’t yet have that circle, seek it out. These people exist, and finding them is worth the effort. They will challenge you in the best way, celebrate your progress, and help you sustain positive changes over time.
