Chocolate Upside Down Cake
I received this recipe from a former co-worker a few years ago and recently rediscovered it while unpacking after a move. I had all the ingredients on hand, so I made it — and loved the result. It’s a simple, delicious variation on the traditional German chocolate cake that’s perfect for gatherings or an indulgent weekend treat.

Ingredients
- 1 ¼ cups water
- ¼ cup butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 cup flaked coconut
- 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips 12 oz.
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 2 cups miniature marshmallows
- 1 package German chocolate cake mix 18 1/4 oz.
- Ingredients listed on the cake mix box (eggs, oil, water as directed)
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a Bundt pan and set it aside.
-
In a small saucepan, heat the water and butter until the butter melts. Stir in the brown sugar until combined, then pour this mixture into the bottom of the prepared Bundt pan. Sprinkle evenly with the coconut, chocolate chips, pecans and marshmallows.
-
Prepare the cake batter according to the package directions. Carefully pour the batter over the marshmallow layer, trying not to disturb it. Bake according to the package directions for a Bundt cake or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
-
Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 5–10 minutes, then invert onto a serving platter. Slice and serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- Use your preferred chocolate chips — dark, semisweet or milk — to suit your taste.
