Waco Travel Guide: Top Attractions, Food, and Day Trips

Waco, TX has become a popular destination in recent years, largely thanks to Chip and Joanna Gaines. Their Fixer Upper brand has reshaped the city’s image, turning Waco into a lively, modern town that draws visitors from across the country.

I live about an hour and a half away, so I visit Waco often, sometimes on a whim. I’ve enjoyed exploring the downtown area, trying new restaurants and coffee shops, and watching the city evolve. I’ve also cooked every recipe from the Magnolia Table Cookbook and written an overview of the book. Over the years I’ve seen many new shops and experiences appear — so much so that the city is adding multiple hotels to accommodate visitors.

Why Waco

The Gaines family and their Magnolia brand have played a central role in Waco’s renaissance. Their projects at The Silos and Magnolia Market have created gathering places, shopping, and food experiences that attract fans and visitors. They’ve continued to expand the property with plans that include community spaces and special event areas.

For many visitors, the appeal is about more than retail or attractions. There’s a special feeling that comes from seeing someone’s vision turned into reality — a place designed with care that invites people to gather, explore, and find inspiration.

Shopping and Eating in Waco

Below is a curated list of favorite spots I visit when I’m in Waco. I usually try to pack a lot into a day trip: enjoy sweet tea, grab a Silo Cookie to take home, and explore the shops and markets. If you visit on a Saturday, the Farmers Market runs from 9 am to 1 pm — you might find the Nightlight Donuts trailer there, which serves some of the best cronuts outside of NYC.
