A Quick Ground Beef and Rice with Panda Express Sweet Chili
With minimal prep and straightforward steps, this Panda Express-style sweet chili ground beef bowl is a great entry point to Asian-inspired cooking. If you enjoy Korean ground beef rice bowls, you’ll appreciate this version. Many ingredients are pantry staples and useful in other dishes, and the recipe adapts well to what you have on hand.
Feel free to add or omit ingredients to suit your taste. Below are the main ingredients that build the dish’s bold flavor.
Ground Beef
Ground beef is an economical, flavorful choice for this stir-fry. Regular ground beef with roughly 20–30% fat keeps the meat juicy and savory. You can substitute lean ground beef or ground turkey for a lighter option, though the flavor and texture will differ slightly.
Panda Express Sweet Chili Sauce
Sweet chili sauce provides sticky sweetness and a gentle heat, glazing the beef and tying the dish together. While you can make homemade sweet chili sauce, store-bought versions work very well for this quick recipe. The sauce is flavorful on its own, so if you’re short on time you can serve it straight from the bottle.
Sesame Oil
Toasted sesame oil adds a nutty richness that balances vinegar and pepper. A small amount goes a long way—use it to boost the aroma and depth of the sauce.
Fish Sauce
Fish sauce contributes umami and savory depth. Though it can smell pungent on its own, a teaspoon in the sauce enhances the overall flavor complexity without making the dish fishy.

Fresh Ginger
Fresh ginger brightens the stir-fry and sharpens the other flavors. Peel and finely grate or mince it—avoid large chunks that can be overpowering. In a pinch, ground ginger can be used, but fresh is best.
Fresh Minced Garlic
Garlic creates a savory foundation for the dish. Use fresh minced garlic for the best aromatic result.
Green Onions
Thinly sliced green onions (scallions) make a crisp, colorful garnish with a mild onion flavor. They add freshness and a pleasant texture contrast.
Red Onions
Red onions provide a touch of sweetness and color. If you don’t have red onions, yellow or white onions will work fine.
Ginger Powder
Ginger powder is a handy pantry backup when fresh ginger isn’t available. It’s more concentrated than fresh ginger, so use sparingly—about 1/8 teaspoon dried equals roughly one tablespoon fresh.
Crushed Red Pepper
Crushed red pepper adds heat to taste. Omit or reduce it for kids or sensitive eaters—the sweet chili sauce already contributes mild spice, while sugar in the sauce helps balance the heat.
Rice Vinegar
Rice vinegar brings bright acidity with a subtle sweetness, perfect for Asian-style sauces. Plain white rice vinegar is what this recipe calls for, though apple cider vinegar can be a fallback in a pinch.

What to Serve With Panda Express Beef and Rice
This ground beef stir-fry is best served over plain steamed rice or leftover rice reheated in a skillet with a splash of water for 3–5 minutes. For variety, serve with quick sides like sliced cucumbers, shredded carrots, steamed broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, or microwave-steamed baby bok choy.

How to Make It
- Heat 1 tablespoon corn or vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1 lb ground beef, 1/4 cup diced red onion, 1 tsp grated fresh ginger and 4 tsp minced garlic. Cook, breaking the meat into your preferred-sized crumbles, until browned and no longer pink.
- In a small bowl whisk together 1 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce, 1 1/2 tsp sesame oil, 1 tsp fish sauce, 1 tsp rice vinegar, a pinch of garlic and onion powder, and crushed red pepper to taste. Pour the sauce over the cooked beef and simmer for a couple of minutes to meld flavors.
- Serve the saucy beef over rice and garnish with sliced green onions, sesame seeds, and optional shredded carrots for color.
This yields an easy, customizable Asian-inspired ground beef stir-fry in a Panda Express-style sweet chili sauce—quick, flavorful, and family-friendly.
